Denver, Colorado

Rocky Mountain High(lights)

May 19 - May 23, 2010

After landing in Colorado’s capital city Nomads will be nearly a mile above sea level and in the midst of a naturally spectacular setting. Those who opt to climb the stairs of the state capitol building may be interested to know that the thirteenth step is exactly one mile above sea level. As we enjoy Denver’s urban sights and sounds (including a first class hotel) and then explore the countryside, we’ll begin to understand Denver’s appeal. It is a thriving modern metropolis whose Rocky Mountain High(lights) ensure its popularity.

The comfort of the Ritz-Carlton will certainly appeal to our sophisticated tastes. This luxury property is located in the heart of downtown Denver only two blocks from the 16th Street Mall and within a mile of the Larimer Square shopping district. The Denver Performing Arts Center is only six blocks away and the Zoo, Botanical Gardens, and Denver Aquarium are within easy reach. Although a convenient location is part of its appeal, Nomads will be glad to know that the Ritz-Carlton has the largest guest rooms in the city, a spectacular fitness center, a luxurious spa, and an award-winning restaurant.

If the Ritz appeals to our civilized side, there are several opportunities to satisfy our love of the country. During a day in Colorado Springs we’ll view the sandstone formations at the Garden of the Gods and enjoy the magnificent view from Pikes Peak. Nature enthusiasts will opt for the full day tour of Rocky Mountain National Park. If you’d rather spend some time in the city you can choose a half day tour instead. A stop at Echo Lake provides a perfect photo opportunity. If you are a train buff or want to learn more about area history then you’ll enjoy riding the rails of the Georgetown Loop—both are included in the trip price.

Whether you’re an urbanite through and through or a nature lover to the end, you’ll find what you’re looking for almost a mile above the sea in a place called Denver.

Detroit/Denver (FM)

Those who make the journey will discover a dichotomy in Denver, where past and present meet and urban sprawl competes with nature. Before checking in at the Ritz-Carlton we’ll enjoy a city tour which highlights Denver’s best. We’ll see historic Denver and the thriving city it’s become, view quiet tree-lined streets that give way to a vibrant financial district, see the golden-domed State Capitol and the U. S. Mint. Afterward we’ll make ourselves comfortable at the Ritz-Carlton, which is located less than a mile from Larimer Square where one can browse specialty shops and find the city’s top restaurants. Football fans might enjoy dining at Elway’s (named for NFL quarterback John Elway), the hotel’s signature restaurant. Overnight: Ritz-Carlton, Denver

Thursday, May 20

Denver (B, L)

On our way to Colorado Springs we’ll stop in the town of Castle Rock, where we’ll drive through the U.S. Air Force Academy to appreciate the architecture, see the Cadet Chapel with its mountain views, and admire the well-manicured athletic fields. Once we arrive in Colorado Springs we’ll tour the Garden of the Gods which is known for its spectacular sandstone rock formations. After an included lunch at the Trading Post we’ll ascend Pikes Peak (14,220 feet above sea level) for a true Rocky Mountain High(light). Pikes Peak is the most visited mountain in the United States. In 1893, at the top of Pikes Peak, Katherine Lee Bates was inspired to write the song “America the Beautiful.” Be sure to bring your camera to capture the views. Overnight: Ritz-Carlton, Denver

Denver (B)

Nature lovers will probably choose the full day optional tour of Rocky Mountain National Park to fully appreciate the park’s magnificent beauty. Stops along the way highlight mountain views. This park is known for its abundant wildlife and spring is an especially good time to see the park’s creatures. You’ll probably want to photograph the spectacular view from Trail Ridge Road (elev. 12,183 feet) or one of several photo opportunities available on the descent. If you’d prefer to divide your time today between the city and the country, you can choose an optional half day tour of the park. The hotel concierge can help you make plans to explore Denver, or you might want to relax at the hotel’s spa or spend time at the 52,000-square foot FORZA Fitness Center, where you’ll find an indoor lap pool, a climbing wall, basketball court, and fitness equipment. Overnight: Ritz-Carlton, Denver

Saturday, May 22

Denver (B, L)

A morning tour of Echo Lake is a photographer’s dream. Whether you want to capture the beautiful views on camera or simply add them to your vacation memories, you’re certain to appreciate time at Echo Lake. We’ll stop for lunch before we ride the Georgetown Loop Railroad to enjoy the views and Victorian homes found in Georgetown, a historic silver-mining town. That still leaves time to enjoy a night in Denver or to relax at the hotel. Overnight: Ritz-Carlton, Denver

Sunday, May 23

Denver/Detroit (B, FM)

If you like to make the most of every vacation moment, then you’ll sign up for the optional U.S. Mint tour. Please be aware that you will not be allowed to carry handbags, umbrellas, or packages of any type during this tour. After the tour you’ll join the rest of our group for the return to Michigan. An aerial view of the mountains from the ‘flying clubhouse’ as we leave will cement the Rocky Mountain High(lights) we enjoyed during our stay.
